Music

INTENT: With Music, we can speak when words fail.

INTENT STATEMENT:

At Kidgate Primary Academy, we believe in the power of Music. Music is an integral part to the life of a child at Kidgate Primary and we are passionate about ensuring all children have opportunities to sing and make music regularly. We understand that it can help us to be happier and more creative, to express ourselves and work as part of a team.  We know that it can make us feel more confident, take pride in what we do and improve our self-esteem.

  • Learn to sing well and enjoy singing
  • Develop musical skills and understanding
  • Experience the wider learning and developmental benefits that singing and music making provides
  • Experience long-term benefits to their health and well-being

IMPLEMENTATION:

To ensure high standards of teaching and learning in Music, we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school. Music is taught through Sing Up and encompasses a range of skill and knowledge based units, that inspire the children and broaden their musical horizons. The curriculum coverage is taught in a progressive and purposeful manner, with teachers using their professional judgement and assessment for learning to make judgements on how pupils are progressing.

Additionally, we understand the importance of providing children with opportunities to further inspire and ensure they find their true musical gifts. Music lessons are taught weekly throughout the year and are provided by the Lincolnshire Music Service. To provide further opportunities, Kidgate have an incredibly talented choir that regularly perform in the local community.

Through the implementation of termly genre studies, the children are able to develop an understanding about different genres and the truly captivating composers that have made history in Music. Ensuring Music is an integral part of Kidgate, we provide children an opportunity to develop curiosity for the subject, as well as an understanding and acceptance of the validity and importance of all types of Music.

IMPACT:

The impact and measure of this is to ensure that pupils are equipped with detailed knowledge and skills that will enable them to be ready for the curriculum at Key Stage 3 and for life as an adult in the wider world.

We want pupils to have enjoyed learning about Music and therefore be inspired to apply their learning and broaden their skills even further in the future.
