Geography
INTENT: With Geography we can weave the world together.
INTENT STATEMENT: Geography helps us to make sense of the world around us and prepare for the future. The purpose of our curriculum is to inspire all children to acquire knowledge and skills and to ignite a lifelong love of learning. We celebrate the cultural capital that our community brings to learning and build on this to broaden children’s understanding of the world. Our commitment to providing equality of opportunity ensures that rich experiences and enhancements are embedded throughout the curriculum.
IMPLEMENTATION:
At Key Stages 1 and 2, geography is personalised, planned and illustrated through our geography Curriculum Map, progression of knowledge & skills & knowledge organisers. Lessons are sequenced using the Kapow scheme of work in line with the National Curriculum. Assessment outcomes and questionnaire findings have helped mould our curriculum priorities and focus on the needs of our children. We ensure we cover geographical skills and fieldwork, Locational knowledge, Human and physical and Place knowledge.
Our geography schema is a way of organising geography knowledge in a meaningful way; it is an appreciation of how facts are connected and the ways in which they are connected, thus we support geography teaching with fiction and non-fiction text, along with a range of enrichment and enhancement opportunities to support children’s understanding. Lessons are delivered through a six-part lesson structure, which is shown on the medium term plan and presentation slides. Teachers have pedagogical choices for lesson delivery using this structure and resources available to them.
Our aims are to prepare our children for life, helping them to know and value who they are and understand how they relate to other people in this ever-changing world.
IMPACT:
Impact on Children:
We want the children to know more and remember more. They will know more about the world around them through our sequencing of learning following Kapow’s progressive structure. The children build up their cumulative knowledge as key themes of Space, Place and Scale are revisited throughout our geography curriculum. We want the children to be inspired to make a difference in the world around them.
Impact on Attainment and Progress
The curriculum demands the best possible outcomes in geography from every child. From each individual child’s starting point, progress is evident.
Evaluation and Impact on our Curriculum
Subjects are taught discretely to ensure specific concepts are the focus. Links are made across curriculum subjects so that skills can be applied in different contexts where
possible.
Evaluation of our Impact on our World
- Our children are inspired to achieve their full potential; have their voices heard and effect change.
- Assemblies and enhancement & enrichment activities are linked to geography throughout the academic year.
- Geography & Understanding the world displays throughout school reinforce the geography curriculum.
