Art

INTENT: With Art, there is creativity and connection.

INTENT STATEMENT: The art and design curriculum at Kidgate allows the children to not only express their creativity, but to also develop their own unique, artistic style. From year to year, the children have ample opportunities to explore, experiment and invent and this promotes a passion and enjoyment of this subject throughout the school. The formal art elements of line, tone, texture, colour, pattern, shape and 3D form underpin each unit to enable the children to become proficient in the skills taught.  Alongside this, the children are exposed to a range of male and female artists, designers and craft makers from different times and cultures. From this, the children are encouraged to develop their critical and analytical thinking and they understand the importance of art’s ability to create a sense of connection, belonging and identity.

IMPLEMENTATION: Kidgate’s art and design curriculum is taught explicitly in Years 1-6 which allows the children’s skills and knowledge to progress. We use the Kapow scheme of work. Units of lessons are sequential, allowing the children to build their skills and knowledge, applying them to a range of outcomes. The formal elements, a key part of the National Curriculum, are also woven throughout units. Key skills are revisited again and again with increasing complexity in a spiral curriculum model. This allows pupils to revise and build on their previous learning. Units in each year group are organised into the four core areas: ‘Drawing’, ‘Sculpture and 3D’, ‘Painting and Mixed Media’, and ‘Craft and Design’. Throughout these units, the children will: develop their making skills through inspiration gleaned from key artists; develop and generate ideas in their own sketchbooks; and will have opportunities to evaluate and analyse their own and other’s work. Knowledge organisers for each unit support pupils by providing a highly visual record of the key knowledge and techniques learned, encouraging recall of skills processes, key facts and vocabulary.

IMPACT: When the children leave Kidgate, they will have confidence in their own artistic style and will have acquired and improved a range of artistic skills. They will have a deep and broad understanding of key artists and their processes. We want the children to take risks, not be afraid to make mistakes and value the journey of art. Art is as much about the process as it is about achieving an end product. We want our children to immerse themselves in the ‘feel’ of creating art. Our ultimate aim is for the children to see art and design as a career path and a subject that they can pursue throughout their next phase of education and into their adult lives.
