Welcome to Year 5
Welcome to the Year 5 page. Please take the time to have a look at what we have been doing so far in Year 5 and also what we will be doing as the year progresses.
Our class teachers are Miss Dobbs and Mrs Rhodes. Mrs Willson is our teaching assistant.
Year 5 visited Grimsby Mosque to find out more about Islam and its importance within the community. The children were given a guided tour of the building, met the Imam and wrote their names in Arabic! All the volunteers at the mosque were friendly and informative and the visit complemented what the children had been learning about the faith in R.E.
BUTLIN'S SAFETY DAY
To Butlin's for a day of safety training! The children took part in various workshops covering areas such as water safety, E-safety, personal safety and fire safety. Many now realise that it is not a good idea to put their phone under their pillow at night!
A NIGHT OF SPELLS...
Potions, spells and a sorting hat kept the children entertained on a visit to the local library. Inspired by the books, the children followed in the footsteps of the Hogwarts heroes.
CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOP
Using a mixture of masks and story telling, the children were inspired to write their own mysterious stories. Mikka was impressed with the quality of the work they produced.
The children watched a very moving play about bullying. The main character, Hope, now a successful pop star, meets the bully who made her life at school miserable. In flashback, the story unfolded.
Following the performance, the children had the opportunity to explore the issues raised through a workshop led by the characters in role. The children were able to show empathy and an understanding of the situation.
Taking part in a quiz show, enabled the children to have fun whilst finding out how to keep their hearts healthy.
MISSION TO MARS ENTRY POINT
Following in the footsteps of Tim Peake, Year 5 are planning a space journey. To see who is suitable for this challenge the children have been attending Space Academy training. They were put through their paces at a boot camp to test their physical and mental strength. This was followed by communication and co-ordination tasks. The children really enjoyed this and it was obvious that some are destined for space!
Celebration of learning - Rivers
As a celebration of our learning, our parents and families were invited in to school to find out what we had discovered. We each chose a subject to be an expert in and enjoyed sharing our knowledge. Parents joined in enthusiastically - weaving, painting and trying to build tetrahedrons!
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...
ELVES 'R' US - The Enterprising Elves
Year 5 have had lots of fun getting ready for Enterprise day. We worked in small groups to produce a range of products that were both cheap to make but also would make a profit! On the day, our products flew off the shelf and by the end of the day we had totally sold out! We can't wait to find out who has been hired and who has been fired - but whatever the result, we know that we will have some money to spend!
BRIDGING THE GAP FOR YEAR 5 PUPILS
Year 5 pupils learnt to be masters of structures after a fascinating workshop relating to our topic on rivers.
The children learnt about the structures of bridges and which designs would make the strongest.
They had to use teamwork alongside mathematical skills to build a large scale bridge. It was so big that it went from one side of the hall to the other!
The children thoroughly enjoyed the experience and look forward to telling you more about this at our Celebration of Learning event at the end of the term.
ENTRY POINT - RIVERS
As part of our entry point for our topic on rivers, we designed and made boats using materials of our choice. We had to choose which category we wanted to enter our boat into: Most stable, quickest or most aesthetically pleasing. We tested our boats in a paddling pool; we had so much fun!
